Documenting the World’s Longest Ski Race

Each spring, far above the Arctic Circle, one of the world’s most demanding endurance competitions takes place: the Nordenskiöldsloppet. Covering an astonishing 220 kilometers within a maximum of 30 hours, the Nordenskiöldsloppet stands as the longest and arguably most demanding cross-country ski race in the world. This historic Arctic challenge pushes participants to their absolute limits – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

“It’s not about winning. It’s about finishing. And about understanding what you’re capable of when the world around you is completely still.”, Thomas Koch

The 2025 edition once again led skiers through vast stretches of snow-covered wilderness in northern Sweden, where freezing temperatures and remote terrain offer little in the way of comfort – but plenty in terms of cinematic potential. The race’s origins date back to 1884, inspired by polar explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, and its revival has become a symbol of resilience and adventure in the modern era.

In close collaboration with ARD and SRF, we produced two feature stories highlighting the raw beauty and extreme nature of this event. From early morning starts in sub-zero temperatures to the quiet determination of the athletes, the work focused not just on the race, but on the spirit behind it.

From wide Arctic landscapes to quiet moments on the trail, the coverage focused on the unique atmosphere of the race. Two athletes were accompanied more closely, offering insight into the physical and mental effort required to complete the 220 kilometers within the 30-hour time limit. Their experiences illustrated the personal side of this extreme challenge and gave the audience a direct connection to the endurance behind the numbers.
